The relationship between the "real" universe and Doodle could be likened to the relationship between the human large intestine and appendix.

Doodle is an accessory extradimensional plane of existence connected to an infinitely more complex and detailed “real” universe. It exists in symbiosis with that “real” universe, and draws forms and concepts from the imaginations of the human beings living within it. The most powerful form of imagination that reaches Doodle comes from raw, spontaneous, ephemeral bursts of creative expression: children’s drawings, scribbles in margins, sketches in pencil that are quickly erased. Though from a human perspective these works might be considered lesser to ones created with thought and technical skill, it is their ineffable impulsive potency that allows their influence to reach Doodle.

From the point of view of its native inhabitants, Doodle appears as an infinitely large, flat plane. It has a smooth, impenetrable "ground," an endless empty “sky,” and the appearance of loose, ever-present fog on the horizon.

While humans can perceive a broad spectrum of visible light, inhabitants of Doodle have “binary vision:” able to see things only in pure black and white without shades of grey. What a human perceives as different hues and shades are seen by Doodle beings as “shade textures,” and their world appears as blobs of black and white at different densities to convey the nuances of light and shadow. The occasional uses of colour within the comic, such as the use of different 1bit palettes, are entirely non-diegetic!
